The unexpected wall: Why your body screams "no" to nursing your toddler

The hidden science of BARR, postpartum biology, and why nursing aversion is not your fault.

When I was pregnant with my fourth baby, I had a plan.

I consider myself an experienced mother and a lactation specialist, so I thought I knew exactly what to expect. I envisioned practicing tandem breastfeeding — nursing both my newborn and my two-year-old daughter. I thought it would be a beautiful way to keep her connected and ease her transition.

But then, my baby arrived in June, and I hit a wall…

A wall of such intense, visceral internal resistance that I completely did not expect.

My daughter hasn’t even touched my breast yet. She just approaches me, looking at me with that familiar desire to latch, and every nerve in my body instantly tightens. My jaw clenches. A heavy, suffocating wave of "please, no" washes over me before the process even begins.

I found myself sitting in that familiar dark room, asking:

Why? I love my daughter. I successfully nursed her for so long. Why does my body suddenly treat her like a threat?

In the lactation world, there is a well-documented but highly taboo phenomenon known as BARR (Breastfeeding Agitation and Rejection Reflex), or simply nursing aversion. But what happens when the aversion kicks in before the child even latches?

This is your nervous system operating on an advanced evolutionary security system.

Our brains possess a tiny command center for survival called the amygdala. If your body is already exhausted, running on broken postpartum sleep, and giving its entire cellular resource to healing and producing milk for a newborn, your brain recognizes that your energy is finite.

When your toddler approaches the breast, your brain registers this as an incoming sensory overload. It doesn’t wait for the discomfort to happen. It acts defensively, throwing a tiny burst of cortisol and adrenaline into your system to create a preemptive boundary. That feeling of irritation, that physical urge to back away — it is not an emotional flaw.

It is a biological alarm system screaming:

The evolutionary switch: The newborn priority

We like to think of ourselves as highly intellectual, civilized beings, but motherhood strips us down to our primal, mammalian roots. And nature is fiercely pragmatic.

To evolution, your two-year-old is a survivor. They have teeth, they can walk, they can process solid food, and their life is no longer in danger. Your tiny newborn, however, is completely helpless. If you do not feed them, they do not survive.

The moment you delivered your baby, a biological switch flipped in your endocrine system. Your hormones — oxytocin and prolactin — completely re-calibrated themselves to support the newborn. When a toddler tries to enter that sacred, fragile symbiotic circle, your biology flags it as unnatural. Your body literally rejects the previous generation of nursing to protect the current one.

Furthermore, a toddler’s suction is mature, heavy, and physically demanding. After the tiny, delicate micro-latches of a newborn, a toddler’s latch can feel physically invasive to an overstimulated postpartum body.

Honoring the red light

For years, modern parenting culture has pushed the narrative that a mother’s capacity must be infinite. We are told that if we love enough, we can split ourselves into a dozen pieces and feed everyone at our own expense.

But your body is telling you the truth. If you feel a roaring "no" inside your chest when your toddler wants to nurse, you are allowed to honor that red light.

Forcing yourself to tandem nurse through physical revulsion doesn’t build a beautiful connection; it builds resentment. It drains the very patience you need to be a responsive mother to both children during the day.

How to pivot without breaking their heart

Your toddler doesn’t actually need the milk. What they are looking for when they ask to nurse is a reassurance of their status.

They are asking: "Mama, am I still allowed to be this close to you? Do you still hold me?"

You can fiercely protect your physical boundaries while completely wrapping them in love. Here is how I am navigating this transition now:

• Intercept before they ask: The moment I see that longing look in my daughter’s eyes, I don’t wait for her to ask to nurse. I open my free arm and say: "Come here quickly, let mama squeeze you! Look how big my lap is, there is room for both of you."

• Validate their big-kid privileges: I gently explain: "My breasts are very tired and sore right now, they are only for the baby’s small tummy. But look what you and I can do because you are big — we can eat this delicious piece of fruit together and read your favorite book."

• Decouple comfort from nursing: Hold them skin-to-skin without nursing. Let them lay their head on your chest, stroke their hair, and smell them. Show them that closeness to your body doesn’t end just because the milk relationship shifted.

My planned tandem journey didn’t happen, and that is okay. Motherhood is not about rigidly sticking to a script we wrote before the reality arrived. It is about listening to our bodies, trusting our instincts, and understanding that saying "no" to a toddler’s latch can sometimes be the healthiest way to say a resounding "yes" to our family’s emotional balance.
